Techflow ships 5 layer 250mm DSS to European Customer

Techflow Design has shipped the first 250mm DSS 5 layer co-extrusion die in Europe that specializes in high tech films for the food industry. The die, which will be used to produce mainly barrier films containing EVOH and polyamides is also able to process polyolefins easily without any modifications to the die.

This next generation co-extrusion die features TechFlows patented dual melt distribution spirals per layer, meaning that the die will in fact be producing a total of 10 layers. Doubling the layers in this fashions adds a host of benefits to the film’s properties. For starters the overall gauge distribution will be greatly improved. Adding layers has been proven to decrease gauge distribution and increase output significantly. However, What sets the DSS apart from other co-extrusion dies, is the fact that the dual spirals act to reduce the layer to layer gauge distribution. This is a more important feature than the over gauge distribution because it is the layer thickness that controls, for instance, how uniform the barrier properties of the film are. A film with good overall gauge distribution does not necessarily have good layer to layer distribution.

Because layer to layer film thickness is difficult to measure we offer customers samples of film made on a DSS co-extrusion die running without tie layers. In this way, the individual barrier layers can be removed from the remaining film to be individually measured. Perform this test on your regular die and compare. Other modular dies claim to have a truly modular design where each layer is essentially a single layer die. In the DSS each module is essentially a two-layer die. The DSS is the only die on the market that can offer this feature.
